Try these tips:
A small flat magnet (freebie advertisements) provides a handy way to keep pins and needles from getting lost as you do hand work. Helpful when you are taking a project on the go - doesn't take up the space of a pincushion.
Keep a small plastic ruler handy and use it often to check your seams. Make sure they are accurate 1/4" and consistent.
Consider using e a fine thread for quilting. A fine thread takes up less room in the seam allowance and may help keep those seams the right size.
